Island Arts Youth Crot Poetry Contest Winners and Honorable Mentions

Thank you Grand Isle County principals, teachers and parents for encouraging the youth from all four island schools to participate in the first Island Arts Youth Crot Poetry Contest. Marisa Dallas, Cathy Croteau and Mary Brennan-Centrella enjoyed the in-school writing workshops where, with scraps of magazines, watercolors, and other art supplies, students collaged and wrote fantastic crot poems. Thank you to all who participated!

Seventy-five (75) entries were blindly judged by Gina Lewis, the Alburgh Public Librarian, and Caroline Korejko, the North Hero Public Librarian.

Thank you to the schools of Alburgh, North Hero and Grand Isle for inviting us to share our passion for the arts and thank you to Folsom Elementary for your incredible display at Wally’s Bagel. Your collaborative approach and beautiful work was a surprise and filled the many who saw it with joy.

The Youth Crot Poetry Contest is for any Grand Isle County youth to creatively experiment with poetry by combining crots, or word fragments, with visual art. The visual art, whether it’s drawn, painted, or collaged from mixed media, should reinforce the ideas in the poem. For example, if you write about Island Arts, then maybe all of your crots would be in red and take the shape of our barn.

Getting Started

Gather paper, something to write with, and art supplies of your choosing. You can draw or collage by using paper from recycling bins, tidbits from nature or create digitally. Then, submit your crot poem by email with a picture or pdf attachment to writingcontest@islandarts.org.

Awards

Island Arts is offering monetary awards for the top 6 poems that best express what’s most important to you. The top two entries will win $100!

Entries will be judged on the strengths of visual impact, expression, integration of crots with art, originality and overall execution.
